Is music science? Why (not)?
Sciences and arts have different habits, methods, tools and institutional conditions. I am happy not to be a scientist, but a composer and to move and practice professionally in a field of ‚wild thinking‘. Although the ‚wild thinking‘, when framed in a format like a musical piece, needs some kind of logic and reflection. Sometimes the process of developing a piece features similarities to scientific research. However, the aim of compositional research is the live-performance: unpredictable and unrepeatable. That seems to be the opposite of a scientific intention, but we would have to as ask a scientist.
Where are the limits of notation?
Regarding every parameter of music, the notation is limited because it is principally based on scales, but musical imagination provokes permanent experiences beyond their layers. On the other hand, the notation is a tool for developing compositional reflections. Hence it limits and provokes compositional ideas and thoughts at the same time.
What would be important for you when curating a concert / festival
Every piece should have its individual space, but those spaces should be connected by something, coming from their inner musical condition or from outside: an idea, a question, intention, conception, contextualization, composition…
