Chaya Czernowin: The Divine Thawing of the Core

As part of the Flute, Oboe, Brass, Percussion, Piano and Cello studios, participants are invited to take part in the World Premiere of a new 60-minute work for solo flute and large ensemble by renowned composer Chaya Czernowin, referring to the unusual intsrumentation of Galina Ustvolskaya’s Symphony No. 2 True and Eternal Bliss! (1979). An ensemble of participants and tutors of the Darmstadt Summer Course will rehearse the new work together with Chaya Czernowin, soloist Claire Chase and conductor Vimbayi Kaziboni and perform it in a public concert at the end of the festival.

Orchestration: Solo flutes (bass flute and amplified C flute); 6 flutes; 6 oboes; 6 trumpets; trombone (doubling on bass trombone); tuba; piano; percussion; 3 cellos

Rehearsals: 27–30 July 2025, 3-hour rehearsals in the afternoons with Chaya Czernowin and Vimbayi Kaziboni

Dress rehearsal & concert: 31 July 2025

Who: Participants of the instrumental studios (Flute, Oboe, Brass, Percussion, Piano, Cello) will be given priority if they like to take part in this project. The tutors will select the players. Please be in touch with us (imd@darmstadt.de) if you want to participate in the project and are not enrolled for the respective instrumental studios. Please submit a short CV and an overview of works performed after 1950.
