ANQI LIU: FOR CELLO SOLO
This work is a heuristic. The composer hopes these sounds convey somewhat illuminating energies to the performer. It is her great memory to work with Nina Vanhoenacker and the Cello-Composition workshop at Darmstadt Summer Course. Thank you, Lucas Fels and Hans Thomalla, and Darmstadt Summer Course, for making this happen in the summer of 2021…
MÁRCIO STEUERNAGEL: ON THE UNFORGIVING FRAGILITY OF FAITH
on the unforgiving fragility of faith – pilgrimages and a prayer
for solo cello explores the higher harmonics of the instrument, played mostly in the region outside of the fingerboard. These are, by nature, very risky and fragile. They tend to break, or not sound clearly. Furthermore, the intonation of many harmonics deviates greatly from tempered tuning. In this piece, these “imperfections” are integrated in the formal design and explored compositionally. The Pilgrimages perform a walk through the different regions of harmonic production in each string, tracing paths between clarity and unclarity, certainty and fragility. Each time it is played, it sounds differently. The Tuning Player increases this transformation by transforming the tuning of the instrument via a scordatura. This piece is part of my Artistic Doctoral Research on imperfection in music as a fundamental compositional and performative dimension, which I currently pursue at the Kunstuniverstität Graz (KUG).
