Darmstadt Summer Course 2020 will be postponed until 2021
Press Release 17 April 2020
Presented by the International Music Institute Darmstadt (IMD) every two years, the next Darmstadt Summer Course will have to be postponed from July 2020 until the summer of 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Darmstadt’s Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch and the director of IMD, Thomas Schäfer, agreed on this after having thoroughly examined the internationally renowned event.
The 50th edition of the Darmstadt Summer Course was initially planned to take place from 18th of July to 1st of August this year. Besides its unique combination of summer academy and international music festival, the Darmstadt Summer Course gains a great part of its significance and attractiveness through being an international meeting point and through creating temporary communities of participants, tutors, guest artists and visitors over two weeks.
Around 450 participants, 60 tutors and 400 guest artists from around 50 nations would have been welcomed in Darmstadt. The artistic program with over 60 public concerts and an extensive academy program was supposed to be presented at the end of April. The worldwide effects of the COVID-19 pandemic make it impossible to present a festival with international participants in a responsible way. For this reason, IMD had to decide – after having talked to funding organizations and artists – to realize the program one year later. The 50th Darmstadt Summer Course are now supposed to be held – 75 years after their first edition in 1946 – from 31 July to 14 August 2021.
The 2020 participation fee will be refunded to enrolled participants. They will be given priority during the 2021 enrollment.
