Born in 1988 in China. Yiran Zhao is a composer, performer and lives in Berlin. She studied composition in China and Europe with Guoping JIA, Caspar Johannes Walter, Erik Oña and Carola Bauckholt. Zhao has received numerous scholarships, including the China State Scholarship, the Germany Scholarship the Academy of Arts Berlin (2017), and the Berlin-Basel Scholarship of the Basel University of Art and Design (2019), and has won many prizes both in China and Germany, e.g. at the Con Tempo Chamber Music Competition China (2009) or the Karlsruhe Composition Competition (2015). Zhao teaches at the Anton Bruckner Private University of Music in Linz.
She has collaborated with numerous artists, groups and festivals in Europe, Asia and North America, including the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Ensemble Musikfabrik, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Ensemble Phoenix Basel, Ensemble Phace, ZEIT RÄUME Basel Biennale für Musik Architektur, ECLAT Festival, Ultraschall Festival Berlin, Wien Modern, Musiktheatertage Wien and many more. Her portrait CD from the Edition Zeitgenössische Musik series will be released in 2022. Together with Kirstine Lindemann she founded the performance duo OTHER EYE. Since 2019 Yiran Zhao is a member of International Performance Company OBLIVIA.
