Zelal Ekinci was born in Izmir in 1994 and grew up in Diyarbakir in Kurdistan. When she was ten years old, her parents moved to Germany while she herself stayed with her grandmother and aunt in Turkey. At the age of 14, she began to play the piano. In the same year she also discovered the flute. During this time, she attended Diyarbakir Anadolu Güzel Sanatlar Lisesi, a school with a focus on music. In the summer of 2011, she graduated from school and began studying at Marmara University in Istanbul. She graduated from this program in 2016 with a degree in music teaching. In 2013 and 2014, she studied musicology for two semesters in Hildesheim, within the Erasmus program. After graduation, she worked for two years at a private school as a music teacher. In 2018, she went to Germany as an “au pair” and spent one and a half years in Darmstadt. She stayed there and started studying social work at the Evangelische Hochschule Darmstadt. Since September 2022, she has been working as a music teacher at the Erich Kästner School in Kranichstein. Even when she was a baby, Zelal’s uncle, a talented baglama player, introduced her to the music of Kurdistan. At school she was then exposed to the classical music of Western Europe, which also captivated her. In her studies, her musical education was influenced by both classical and traditional music of Turkey. After emigrating to Germany, she became fascinated with the genre of electronic music, which she combines with her traditional musical experiences to create a diverse cultural expression as a DJ.
