The double bass is an instrument with a chaotic history outside the norms, littered with metamorphoses. Its trajectory is filled with inventions, transformations, experiments and failures of every sort. The double bass emerges from a particularly special and creative anarchy, and its player wields a fertile terrain in which everything remains to be invented.
This Studio will take place every morning through the two weeks of the Darmstadt Summer Course, aiming at researching and shaping your practice of the double bass to build your own singular musical voice, with a strong focus on solo as well as duo and trio chamber music repertoire from the 21st century.
The Studio will be divided in three categories:
A) Collective warm-up and sessions for improvisations, discussions or sharing research. This will be used by the group to reflect on the double bass as a constantly expanding tool, including development of sonic extensions such as pedals, DYI or live-electronic devices, and/or elements from the performance field.
B) Masterclasses on specific solo repertoire from the 21st century. The set of pieces can be of your choice or proposed by Florentin in advance. It is important that you use this as an opportunity to uncover new territories and new pieces, more than refining your pre-existing repertoire. The Studio will also include interventions from composition tutors presenting their own works for double bass and their specific approach on the instrument (Clara Iannotta, Georges Aperghis, Sarah Nemtsov, among others).
C) Coachings on chamber music repertoire (duo & trio from 21st century), inviting other instrumental tutors and participants (soprano, e-guitar etc.) for stand-alone collaborations that will unfold during the two weeks.
Regular Open Spaces will be organized to share your music and research with the other artists from the Summer Course.
Florentin Ginot would like to get to know something about the participants in his studio beforehand and asks them to e-mail him (doublebass@darmstaedter-ferienkurse.de) ONE PDF containing the following documents as part of the registration process:
- CV
- A link of one video recording of a solo piece composed after 1980 (preferably after 2000). You can include one improvisation as well.
