Two performances

Round birthdays in art are always a bit of a blessing and a curse: Do we only commemorate people because they have a milestone birthday? Or is the milestone birthday “only” an occasion to specifically honor artists who are already widely appreciated and valued? For Luciano Berio, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year, the latter is undoubtedly the case. It‘s always worth taking a look at his diverse œuvre – whether it’s a milestone birthday or not…  As part of the Darmstadt Summer Course 2025, the focus will be on his composition Différences (1958-59) for five instruments (flute, clarinet, harp, viola, cello) and stereophonic tape, which was performed in Darmstadt in 1961 by the International Kranichstein Chamber Ensemble under Bruno Maderna’s direction.

Différences will be performed twice in the recital-lecture with a lecture by Angela Ida De Benedictis on the aesthetics and genesis of the work and in particular on the aspect of “tape playback”. The ensemble, conducted by Yeeun Oh and Vallios Konstantinos (HfMDK Frankfurt am Main), consists of participants of the Darmstadt Summer Course; Kilian Schwoon, who teaches electroacoustic composition in Bremen, is responsible for the sound direction.
