PARTICIPATORY OPERA AND MUSIC THEATRE: A NEW FIELD OF PRACTICE AND RESEARCH
Lukas Pairon
In recent years, composers, and performers have become increasingly involved in participatory opera and music theatre projects created in collaboration with people who are not professional performers. Often developed outside of traditional artistic venues, these projects invite us to rethink artistic authorship, the role of the composer, and the relationship between artistic and social practice.
In this presentation, Lukas Pairon will introduce current international research in this emerging field, examining the aesthetic and ethical questions it raises. He will share examples of participatory work from diverse contexts and reflect on what this means for composers and music-makers interested in socially engaged artistic processes.
The scholarly network SIMM is from 27 to 30 July 2025 in Darmstadt organising at the Hochschule Darmstadt a research seminar on participatory opera and music theatre projects, in collaboration with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London) and with the Academic Chair Jonet (Ghent University).
