Concert installation by Mark Andre with the SWR Experimentalstudio

Sat 26 July 2025, 18.00 – 22.00

Orangerie

The number of persons who can enter the space at the same time is limited. Tickets for certain time slots are available as of 15 June 2025.

“Every space has its own acoustic signature,” Mark Andre once said, “it is an instrument.” Space and interspace are not only central metaphors in his approach to composition: Mark Andre has also been working with the principle of convolution for many years. Impulse responses of a space are recorded, the space echographed, to then project these acoustic properties of concrete spaces into others, aided by live electronics; or to provide instrumental sounds with reverberation from other spaces.

As part of the Darmstadt Summer Course 2025, the composer is tackling this experiment in cooperation with Michael Acker and Joachim Haas from SWR's Experimentalstudio. Based on three solo pieces with electronics for cello, clarinet, and piano, the live installation will trace the unfolding of compositional space. Visitors enter the creation process of the respective pieces, so to speak.

While working on a new piece, there are composers who, metaphorically speaking, walk through a room or a sequence of rooms from beginning to end. This does not apply to him, says Mark Andre. His compositional process is anything but linear. The creation of individual materials, often going back to the collaboration with performers, follows a completely different temporality than their later sequence in the composition. In a sense, he simultaneously moves mentally into different corners of the room, whereby doors to other pieces can also open before the materials are given their final position in the compositional coordinate system.

The live installation can be visited on July 26 and 27 between 18.00 and 22.00. As space is limited, tickets for specific time slots will be available from June 15. However, spontaneous visits are also possible if numbers permit.
