Sarah Davachi: Three Unisons for Four Voices (2024)
for violin, cello, bass clarinet, trombone, percussion & ondes Martenot
No Hay Banda
After No Hay Banda‘s Darmstadt debut with Steven Takasugi’s Il Teatro Rosso, the ensemble's next concert is a complete mood-swing: Three Unisons for Four Voices, an almost 70-minute piece by Sarah Davachi (*1987), is both a process and a still image. In this piece, the Canadian-born composer and performer works with different textures and incidental harmonies. The four “voices” of the ensemble (strings, winds, percussion, ondes Martenot/electronics) proceed in a slow-moving monody that is made into a sort of variable canon by way of open and offset timings. As players gradually fall in and out of step with one another, the ear begins to focus on the acoustic spaces in between, bringing into question what it means for a sound to be felt as functioning in unison.
