Born 1962 in Lörrach/Germany, studied in Freiburg with Christoph Henkel, in Amsterdam with Anner Bijlsma,and in Fiesole and Florence with Amadeo Baldovino. He also participated in master classes with Antonio Janigro, Siegfried Palm and Bruno Canino, among others. He is a founding member of ensemble recherche and since 1985 has participated in almost 400 premieres in the area of contemporary chamber and ensemble music. Since the end of 2005 he has been a member of the Arditti Quartet, succeeding Rohan de Saram.
His close relationship with composers like Klaus Huber, Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm, Salvatore Sciarrino, and Beat Furrer led to numerous works being dedicated to him. Since 2013, Lucas Fels is professor for contemporary music interpretation at the Frankfurt Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst as well as chairman of the Friends of IMD.
He regularly teaches at many conservatories (Lucerne, Essen, Brno, Lviv, Stuttgart). Since 2013 Lucas Fels is Professor for Chamber Music at Frankfurter Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst.
At the Darmstadt Summer Course, Lucas Fels has appeared regularly as an interpeter and as cello tutor between 1998 to 2004 and again since 2010.
