A Voice Beyond the Edge

The extended vocal techniques have been around for the last 60 years, thanks to vocal pioneers famous for their determination to cross the boundaries. But now, thanks to new tools from acoustics and medical imaging, we have the possibility to scientifically study and codify issues surrounding the sound production of phenomena ranging from multiphonics to biphonation to deterministic chaos. My approach to the research on voice is becoming more systematic: the final aim is to enrich the cultural baggage of both singers and composers. More awareness of the hundreds of possibilities of unusual sounds hidden inside the vocal instrument, together with the consciousness of the practice of it, can enhance the variety of timbre qualities in a voice.
