Binarity is much more than just a gender issue. In many areas, binary thinking divides our reality and thereby establishes power structures. Binary patterns are also omnipresent in contemporary music, such as the division into notated/improvised music, interpretation/composition, serious music/pop music. Classifications of this kind have a massive influence on the financing and realization of artistic projects. In addition, there are conditions of origin that have a similarly exclusive effect: academic training in Europe, sufficient private resources or early influence from the European canon. Many of the factors mentioned are deeply rooted institutionally and must be changed accordingly at an institutional level. And yet they also always affect artistic and musical work.
The workshop The Enby Future Manifesto sees itself as a utopian safe space. It is aimed equally at composers, performers and everyone in between. The intention is to reveal and analyze the binary aspects of our artistic practice and to develop deviant procedures. Together with different guests, we will explore the possibilities of collaborative, non-binary composing and develop concrete alternatives for the realization and presentation of our musical work.
