Opera and Music Theater

Composers working on opera or music theater projects can present their projects and receive feedback from tutors and other participants of the workshop.

Bring a project you are working on. It can be just an idea with a few materials, a partially sketched piece, or a finished work. Present the theatrical concept, the text, the music (if there is some already), ideas for narrative, sound, visuals, space and open it up for suggestions, comments, critique from the others present in the room – a first step towards discourse and collaboration that are so crucial for opera and music-theater works.

The workshop will meet two or three times to discuss the projects presented by the selected participants. Additional activities might involve conversations with practitioners in the field (directors, set designers, librettists), discussion of theoretical texts, and/or of important pieces.

All Darmstadt Summer Course participants are welcome to join (not just the presenters), listen, and contribute to the discussion.

Application

All composers must be registered participants of the Darmstadt Summer Course 2025.

To apply for this workshop, please submit ONE PDF file (LASTNAME_Firstname_Opera2025.pdf) containing the following:

• Your name, e-mail contact, where you are based, if you are in a degree program (where)
• Name of the project, and what stage of the process you are in (whether just sketching first ideas, already in the middle of writing, or whether the piece has already been performed)
• One short paragraph about the project

and e-mail it by 15 April 2025 to:
