Marcus Weiss

Saxophone Tutor

Studied saxophone at the Basel University of Music with Iwan Roth, as well as saxophone (Frederick L. Hemke) and philosophy at Northwestern University in Chicago. 1989: Soloist Prize of the Swiss Tonkünstlerverein.

Marcus Weiss performs as a soloist with many European orchestras and ensembles, as well as a chamber musician with the Trio Accanto and with the saxophone ensemble Xasax/Paris.

He has worked with the following composers, among others, who have written works for him: Mark Andre, Georges Aperghis, John Cage, Peter Eötvös, Beat Furrer, Vinko Globokar, Georg-Friedrich Haas, Toshio Hosokawa, Thomas Kessler, Yu Kuwabara, Hanspeter Kyburz, Helmut Lachenmann, Misato Mochizuki, Roland Moser, Giorgio Netti, Stefan Prins, Rebecca Saunders, Salvatore Sciarrino, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Nadir Vassena.

In 2010, Bärenreiter published “The Techniques of Saxophone Playing”, which he co-authored with Giorgio Netti.

Marcus Weiss has been Professor of Saxophone and Chamber Music at the Basel University of Music since 1995. He directs the study programme “Specialized Master for Contemporary Music”, which he designs together with Sarah Sun and Yaron Deutsch.

He regularly gives masterclasses at European (Paris, Madrid, London, Berlin, Vienna, Porto, Riga, etc.) and American universities. Until 2023 he was a lecturer at the “Darmstadt Summer Courses for New Music”. He is a regular lecturer at the Ensemble Academy IMPULS in Graz and has been a member of the program group of the “Festival Rümlingen” since 1992.
