Composition & Composer

Born in 1943 in Coventry/UK. His formal education took place at the Birmingham School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, London, and then he studied with Ton de Leeuw in Amsterdam and with Klaus Huber at the Basel Conservatoire. The name Brian Ferneyhough is irrevocably connected with the term „new complexity.“ His compositions make the greatest technical demands on the player. Next to his outstanding reputation as a composer he also counts among the most important composition teachers of his generation. He taught composition at the Musikhochschule Freiburg, at the Civica Scuola di Musica in Milan, at the Royal Conservatory Den Haag, and the University of California, San Diego. Brian Ferneyhough has been teaching at the Darmstadt Summer Course since 1976. In 2023, he will be teaching small groups online.
