Matthew Shlomowitz

Composition Tutor & Composer

Matthew Shlomowitz is a London based composer, raised in Adelaide, Australia. He has developed a range of projects. The pieces in his Popular Contexts series combine recognisable recordings with instrumental music. Letter Pieces are open score works combining physical action and music. He has made several performance-lecture works addressing aesthetic issues, such as Lecture About Bad Music. He recently started on a new series titled Explorations in Polytonality and other Musical Wonders that play with compositional techniques and historical textures and forms that are out of circulation within contemporary music making. In recent years he has written Glücklich, Glücklich, Freude, Freude for keyboardist Mark Knoop and the SWR Symphonieorchester for 2019 Donaueschinger Musiktage; Graveyard Slot (with guest appearance) for Ensemble Nikel; and Hey Hey its Tuesday, a collaboration with video-maker Laura Spark for Speak Percussion. The first production of his opera Electric Dreams was produced by Kunstuniversität Graz in cooperation with ORF Musikprotokoll (directed by Philipp M. Krenn), and a second produced by Grand Théâtre de Genève, Théâtre Am Stram and Ensemble Contrechamps (directed by Sara Ostertag). Matthew co-directs Plus Minus Ensemble with Mark Knoop and Vicky Wright; the podcast Soundmaking with Håkon Stene; and teaches at University of Southampton.
