Jorge Sánchez-Chiong

Jorge Sánchez-Chiong was born in Caracas and lives in Vienna. Most of the full-length works of the Venezuelan composer of Cuban descent arise from an intensive inter- and transdisciplinary working process in the fields of music theatre, performance and choreography, video art, experimental film and new media (with Michaela Grill, the collective TE-R, Thomas Wagensommerer), experimental theater (Anna Mendelssohn), and feature film (Thomas Marschall). Together with the choreographer Brigitte Wilfing he leads the ensemble for choreographic composition and artistic research ›andother stage‹.

Among the festivals, orchestras, and ensembles that commission him are the International Music Institute Darmstadt, New Chamber Music Witten, Berlin Concert Hall, Vienna Concert Hall, Traiettoria Parma, transart Trentino Alto Adige, Transit Leuven, Lucerne Festival, Festival MARS L.A., Wien Modern, Bregenz Festival, Klangspuren, musikprotokoll, Junge Oper Stuttgart, Musiktheatertage Wien, FastForward 20:21, Klangforum, Phace, Black Page, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Basler Sinfonietta, Stump-Linshalm, Collegium Novum Zürich, decoder Hamburg, Nadar Ensemble Belgium, Stroma New Zealand, China FMW Taipei, MIVOS Quartet New York and others; as well soloists such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Dorothee Oberlinger, Lars Mlekusch and Ernesto Molinari.

Under the name JSX, he played as an electronic musician and turntablist with artists from the international noise and improvisation scene or as a soloist in front of ensembles and orchestras such as the Haydn Orchestra Bolzano, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. He stands with artists such as Sudden Infant, Pia Palme, Electric Indigo, Martin Siewert, Kazuhisa Uchihashi, Christian Weber, DJ Pure, Lukas Koenig and many others on stage. His CD and DVD releases as a composer and turntablist are on the labels orf, ein_klang, cronica electronica, idyllic noise, film archive austria.

Sánchez-Chiong is Professor of Composition with a focus on new and experimental media at his alma mater, the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (MdW), where he studied composition by Francis Burt and Michael Jarrell. At the same institution he led the transdisciplinary project NeW_AiR (New experimental Ways). In 2010 he was Artist in Residence at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, and in 2013 Composer in Residence at the Ensemble Phace. He was a guest professor at the Zurich University of the Arts and has been a composition lecturer at the International Summer Course for new music in Darmstadt and Impuls Graz. The Music Prize of the City of Vienna, the Theodor Körner Prize, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra Scholarship and the State Scholarship for Composition are among the awards bestowed on him.
