18.07. – 01.08.2020

Presented every two years by Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt (IMD), the Darmstadt Summer Course is an international “hot spot” for contemporary and experimental musical practices and composition: it is summer academy, festival and discourse platform at the same time and a meeting point of over 400 composers, interpreters, performers, sound artists and scholars. Since 1946, the Darmstadt Summer Course has been aiming at bringing together strong musical and aesthetic positions, providing a framework for high-level performance and discourse, a lively international network and an inspiring experience for our participants and guests.

The next Darmstadt Summer Course will take place from 18 July to 1 August 2020, offering an intense program of courses, workshops, concerts, lectures, discussions and think tanks with around 60 tutors and many guests. Around 400 active participants from around 50 nations are expected.

Online-registration (registration form, credit-card payment of participation fee) will start on 22 January 2020 and will either close as soon as an activity is booked up or on 31 March at the latest.
For several activities, there is a selection process in advance. Please note that for some of them there is a deadline before the booking period!

Participation fee: 430€ (+13,90€ system and booking fees)
Lodging and meals are not included in the participation fee.

To all mothers and fathers interested in one of the Darmstadt workshops or studios:

We are intensively trying to organize child care during the classes and to offer a playroom near the campus. We are doing this for the first time and at this point we still don’t know how much support we’ll be able to offer since space and available staff is limited. But if the lack of child care prevents you from applying for Darmstadt, please get in touch with us via
